From Player to Maker: A Conceptual Framework for Language Learning in Narrative Game Design Experiences (EDIT9990)

In this paper, I describe a conceptual framework for understanding how project-based, game design experiences can foster meaningful language learning in K-12 contexts. Central to this framework are the dimensions of creativity, motivation, student as designer and researcher, and teacher as facilitator and critic. Theories of autonomous language learning, problem solving, meaningful narratives, and authentic language also complete the framework. Finally, examples of narrative game creation tools are described and suggested for classroom use.

Dilemma: Investigating decision-making processes with a simulated 2D scenario

This paper presents the results of the first iteration of a design-based research study that aimed at fostering reflexive thinking about one's own ethical decision-making processes, especially in regards to biases. For this purpose, a short 2D game scenario, "Dilemma", was developed by the researcher and played by 9 participants in a graduate level course at an American university. The intervention encouraged collaboration and negotiation between participants. The data for the study consists of observation, a focus group, and an open-ended survey. Preliminary data analysis suggests that the design was helpful in fostering participants' reflections about how they made their decisions. Possible directions for the next iteration of the design include the addition of biographical data about the characters in the scenario, as well as the development of an online platform for players to discuss their decisions.

Paper will be uploaded upon completion.

Online Courses at the Carl Vinson Institute of Government

As part of my assistantship duties at the Carl Vinson Institute of Government in the 2017-2018 academic year, I have developed instructional videos, interactive presentations, 2D animations, and online courses. This material, organized in courses that are 3-6 hours in length, is part of continuing education for municipal elected officials in Georgia. These courses have recently been certified by the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy. To learn more about these courses, click here .
